The new lavazza calendar
I’m Michael Opitz, managing director of the foundation Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung and coordinator of coffee&climate a programme that places coffee producers right at the center of addressing the effects of climate change. Global warming, increasingly frequent torrential rains and extended periods of drought are adversely affecting coffee production in terms of quality and quantity, whilst, according to the “International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT)”, there is a risk of reduction of suitable areas for coffee production of up to 50% in 30 years’ time. It is now essential to think about a virtuous and powerful model.
This is why coffee&climate was founded: a programme where close collaboration among scientists, researchers and local coffee growers generates better know how, new techniques and suitable tools to improve the production cycle of coffee and to better cope with climate changes.
The battle for reaching the SDGs targets by 2030 will be won only if people will take care of their own local environment: long life to the “Earth Defenders”!
