Latte Art: What is it and how to do it (Guide for beginners)

By Lavazza Team 2/3 minutes

Latte art is an enjoyable and visually appealing aspect of the coffee experience  that coffee lovers all over the world can appreciate. If you're interested in learning how to create your own latte art, we've got you covered!

In this guide, we'll walk you through the process of making coffee art as a beginner, so you can start crafting beautiful designs on your coffee. The best part? You don't need fancy equipment to get started—just a few basic tools will do.

So, let's delve into the world of coffee art painting and discover how to create your own masterpieces:

What is latte art?

Latte art involves using milk foam to create intricate designs that float on top of your warm cup of coffee. To achieve this, the milk needs to be steamed to create microfoam, which will separate from the coffee and form patterns on the surface.

What do you need for latte art?

To make latte art, you'll need the following:

  1. Espresso or alternative drink bases: Whether it's a rich espresso  or other diluted bases like matcha or chocolate, make sure you have a concentrated beverage to serve as the canvas for your art. You don't need a professional coffee machine ; a French press or manual milk frother  will work fine.
  2. Milk of your choice: Regular full fat milk or soy milk are the preferred options for creating latte art; non-diary alternatives like oat, coconut, almond and more are available, but you need to choose the dedicated special “barista” line, otherwise they can’t be frothed due to the low content of proteins.
  3. Metal milk jug/pitcher: Choose a jug or pitcher with a sharp pour spout. As a beginner, you might feel more comfortable using a smaller size that fits well in your hand.
  4. Milk steamer or manual frother: These tools will help you create the desired texture and consistency for your milk foam.
  5. Coffee mug : Any coffee mug will do as your final masterpiece will be poured into it . If you wish to make the pouring easy, choose a cup with a half-sphere shape.

How to do latte art:

Follow these steps to create your own latte art:

  1. Prepare your drink base in the chosen mug.
  2. Pour milk into the steamer or into it. If you wish to make the pouring easy, choose a cup with a half-sphere shape. Adjust the depth and duration of frothing to achieve different thickness: thin froth for flat white, medium for latte art and thick for a regular cappuccino. Any time the aim is to create Latte art, you will need to avoid over-frothing the milk.
  3. Pay attention to the milk's surface. Latte foam should be smooth with few or no bubbles. If it's too thin and resembles regular milk with transparent foam, froth it a bit more. If it's too thick and bubbly, you've gone overboard.
  4. Once the steaming or frothing is done, gently tap the milk jug on the table to pop any remaining bubbles, then swirl the pitcher until pouring to blend the froth and the liquid milk.
  5. Hold the pitcher with your dominant hand and tilt the mug toward it. Pour the milk into the base with a circular motion, mixing them together. Don't worry if the pattern isn't visible yet.
  6. As you fill about one-third of the mug, lower the jug and start pouring the foam to create the desired design. For beginners, it's recommended to start with a basic latte art pattern like a heart . The closer the pitcher mouth goes to the coffee the easier to pour the froth.
  7. If you want to fix a disfigured pattern, use a toothpick to stretch and refine the design.

Practice makes perfect:

Remember, mastering latte art takes practice. Don't be discouraged if your first attempts aren't flawless. Start with simple latte art designs and gradually challenge yourself with more intricate patterns. If you find it difficult to create freehand art, you can also try using stencils for cappuccino  with chocolate  powder or sauce to create artistic designs on the foam.

So, grab your tools, experiment, and let your creativity flow .  Enjoy the process of creating your first latte art and have fun exploring the endless possibilities!
